The sole survivor of the astromech droid team on Queen Amidala s J-type 327 Nubian royal starship. R2D2 later served as Anakin Skywalker s astromech droid, as one of the droids on Leia Organa s ship Tantive IV, was found by Jawas and sold to Luke Skywalker, whom he stayed with throughout most of the Galactic Civil War
