In most Getter Robo adaptions, he is the inventor of Getter Robo, a machine originally designed for deep-space exploration, who eventually discovers and becomes obsessed with the cosmic energy known as "Getter Rays." His daughter is Michiru Saotome and his son is Tatsuhito, all of whom work and live with him at the Saotome Research Institute.
