Synopsis
Murasaki Shikibu was born into the family of a skilled scholar of Chinese studies, though her social status was not high.
In an era when women were expected to limit their learning to composing waka poetry, Shikibu devoted herself to Chinese studies and immersed herself in reading stories and diaries one after another. As she grew into an intelligent woman, she experienced marriage and separation, and eventually entered court life to serve Empress Akiko.
